Elective blocks are also an opportunity to do away rotations at other institutions (note that Acting Internships at outside institutions will count for elective credit at UNC).
Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™ (VSLO®)

Elective Credits

Twelve weeks of elective experience, equal to 18 credit hours, are required during the Individualization Phase. Two-week, four-week, and longitudinal electives are available. Each 4-week elective block is equivalent to 6 credit hours or ~160 hours of workAt least 8 weeks of elective time should be clinical experiences (please note that pathology and radiology are considered clinical experiences).

Elective Considerations for Dual Degree Students

  • MD/PhD Program: Can carry over 18 elective credit hours
  • MD/MPH: Can carry over 6 elective credit hours
  • MD/MBA: Can carry over 12 elective credit hours

Grading and Assessments

Four-week electives taken during Individualization Phase are graded on a scale of Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail. Two-week electives are graded Pass and Fail. 

Assessments include:

  • Mid-course Feedback (formative)
  • Common Assessment Form (summative)
