Comprehensive Advanced Medical Program of Spanish (CAMPOS)

The UNC School of Medicine views CAMPOS as one of several strategies to address a critical need in our state: a shortage of physicians who can effectively communicate and care for the growing number of Latino patients. The program has a formal application process that is voluntary and relies on student input to make it more responsive to learner needs.
CAMPOS, started in 2004, is an integral component of the UNC SOM and its Hispanic Health Initiative. It was initially supported by a four-year grant from The Duke Endowment and was developed through collaboration between the Departments of Medicine and Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Student Accomplishments:
Farmworker Student Health Alliance – student run organization aiming to improve health outcomes for North Carolina farmworkers through collaboration with UNC medical students, the Comprehensive Advanced Medical Program of Spanish (CAMPOS), the North Carolina Farmworkers Health Program and migrant farmworkers.
Both of the above programs were started by CAMPOS students, and demonstrate the involvement of our students in the global and local community.
Student Research – CAMPOS student Sebastian Werner published a paper in the Harvard Medical Student Review detailing how immigration policies affect the health of Latinx citizen children.
