Alcoholic Disease
As the name implies, alcoholic liver disease is a result of the direct toxic effects of alcohol on the liver. In its early stages, alcoholic liver disease may be reversible if the individual discontinues drinking alcohol. Once cirrhosis (scarring) is established, however, there may be continued progression of liver disease to liver failure and increased risk for liver cancer. A common misconception is that drinking beer or wine is not as bad as drinking other spirits. In fact, a glass of wine, a can of beer, or a shot of whiskey contain a similar alcohol content. Individuals who are unable to stop drinking alcohol on their own should seek the help of professional counselors.
