About

Dr. Bozymski is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is also Adjunct Professor at Duke University Medical Center[.He completed a rotating internship at Scripps/Mercy Hospital in San Diego and a 3 year medical residency at Marquette U. School of Medicine/Medical College Of Wisconsin interrupted by a 2 year stint in the US Army. He then completed a GI Fellowship at UNC where he was fortunate to work under great GI chiefs, Drs. John Sessions, Don Powell, David Brenner, Robert Sandler and Nicholas Shaheen and a fantastic group of gastroenterologists. Dr. Bozymski established the Motility Center at UNC and helped Duke U. establish their unit and also led the Endoscopy Unit at UNC for many years. Along with Roy Orlando he led the UNC GI division for ~2 years.

He  is a recognized expert in the field of esophageal diseases and disorders of esophageal motility, therapeutic endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease. He spent several weeks in Germany with Dr. Laslo Safrany  improving ERCP skills He helped in establishing the Endoscopy Unit at The University of Alexandria in Egypt and served as an advisor to the University of Sarotov Medical School in Russia. He is committed to excellence in the care of patients.and working with GI  fellows. His formal lectures are a model of clarity and exposition. He has written widely in his field and served on the editorial boards of a number of prestigious journals.

Dr. Bozymski continues to be a much sought-after speaker at national and international meetings. He has served as Govenor of NC for the American College of Gastroenterology on two separate occasions. He is A Master of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians, and is a Fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and The American Gastrointestinal Association.

Dr. Bozymski has been very active in the American College of Physicians.  He has participated in the abstract selection for the Associates Competition at the Annual Session and at regional meetings.  He was a member of the MKSAP IV Board and a manuscript reviewer for the Annals of Internal Medicine and a number of other journals.  He served with distinction as College Governor for North Carolina  and has received the NC Chapter’s Laureate Award  and was appointed as a Master in the American College of Physicians in 2002.

He is also very involved in the gastrointestinal subspecialty societies and has served on a number of committees having chaired several of them. He has been recognized by these societies and has received a number of awards, including the Distinguished Clinician Award of the American Gastroenterological Association, the Master of Endoscopy Award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the University of North Carolina Distinguished Faculty Award. He received the Master’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Gastroenterology from the AGA Institute in 2006 and was honored in 2007 with the establishment of The Eugene M. and Mary Kay Bozymski and William and Linda Heizer Distinguished Professorship at the University of North Carolina Medical Center. He was awarded an honorary degree in humane letters by John Carroll University in 2011 and was privileged to give the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society lecture in 2012, at The Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Bozymski worked part time at UNC Medical Center and the Durham /Duke VAMC for the latter part of his career and was pleased to learn that the Duke GI division was outstanding and their fellows excellent.
