Emeritus Director, Center for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
Areas of Interest
Gastrointestinal motility disorders including fecal incontinence, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, and bloating.
About
Currently I am directing a multi-site grant to compare treatments for fecal incontinence with other sites including the May Clinic (Adil Bharucha, PI), Augusta University (Satish Rao, PI), Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates in Minneapolis (Ann Lowery, PI), University of Michigan (William Chey, PI), and University of Alabama at Birmingham (Isuzu Meyer, PI). The Research Triangle International in Durham, NC (Marie Gantz, PI) is the data coordinating center. We are comparing biofeedback and injections of an inert bulking agent (Solesta) for treatment of fecal incontinence. Outcomes include reductions in the frequency of incontinence, safety, and quality of life. More generally, my interests are in the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of these disorders. The treatments I investigate are behavioral approaches such as biofeedback.
