Dr. Jessica Lin is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Her research focuses on malaria in Southeast Asia. Topics of interest include understanding the genetic basis of malaria relapses, identifying molecular markers of drug resistance, and characterizing the malaria transmission reservoir. As a physician, she enjoys seeing a wide range of patients in the infectious diseases clinic at UNC and attending on the inpatient ward and consult services.
Dr. Lin was born and raised in Maryland and is of Chinese descent. She attended Yale University, completed her medical training at the Baylor College of Medicine and internal medicine training at the University of California, San Diego. In 2008, she traveled to Thailand to work on malaria clinical trials with the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences. She fell in love with the work and the region and has been returning ever since. She completed her ID fellowship training at UNC in 2012 under the research mentorship of Drs. Steve Meshnick and Jonathan Juliano.
As a physician scientist, Dr. Lin is most interested in using modern lab methods to tackle clinically relevant questions that bear on infectious diseases affecting the poor. She has found it highly rewarding to work within the collaborative setting at IDEEL@UNC and to share her passion for global health with students and colleagues alike. Her husband is an ophthalmologist in the Raleigh area. They live in Apex with their two kids and two dogs.
