About
Dr. Carson serves as Professor and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. His clinical work is primarily in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at UNC Medical Center, and his research interests include health services research and clinical trials in critical illness. He has a particular interest in outcomes of patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation, and he is part of a research network (the ProVent Investigators) that is currently conducting randomized controlled trials of interventions to improve physician-family communication and support in the management of these challenging patients. Dr. Carson is an active member of the American Thoracic Society and has served as the Chair of the Critical Care Assembly. He currently chairs the Steering Committee for the ATS Methods in Epidemiology, Clinical, and Operations Research courses.
