The American Gastroenterology Association gives its Distinguished Achievement Award for 2010 to our former student, Dr Mary Estes. Dr Estes is currently Professor of Molecular Virology and Microbiology and Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston; she is also the founding director of the Texas Gulf Coast Digestive Diseases Center. Dr Estes is well recognized for her studies of the GI pathogens, norovirus and rotavirus. Her graduate training in this department (1967-1972) involved studies of the simian polyomavirus, SV40, in Dr Joseph Pagano’s laboratory . Her outstanding researches were recognized in May 2007 with election to the National Academy of Sciences. The Distinguished Achievement Award has been given annually since 1968 for special accomplishments in gastroenterology. Mary Estes is the first woman to be so honored.
