While most NIH grant paylines have been stuck at historical lows for years, our Department has just reached its highest level of NIH funding: $14.1 million in 2012, ranking us 6th among our peers (i.e., microbiology/immunology departments at public universities). Since the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research started compiling these data, this is the best our Department has ever ranked. The current total represents an increase of $2.4 million (20.3%) in annual NIH funding in the last 4 years.

The calculations reflect direct plus indirect costs but exclude R&D contracts and ARRA awards, and the numbers are based on annual NIH awards to each department’s primary faculty. You can read the full report for FY2012 and earlier years at the link below.
