U.S. News “Best Global Universities” ranks UNC Microbiology & Immunology 6th among its peers

For the first time, U.S. News has published rankings of the “Best Global Universities,” designed to provide international context for a university’s academic research and reputation. Surveys and metrics were used to rank the top 500 institutions spanning 49 countries and also to assess the strengths of 21 subject areas.

For the subject area of microbiology, UNC ranks 20th among universities worldwide, and 6th among its peer institutions (public universities).

For the subject area of immunology, UNC ranks 24th among universities worldwide, which also places it 6th among its peer institutions.

Needless to say, I am excited by this news and very proud of the current and past members of our Department of Microbiology & Immunology. The numbers above reflect our steadily growing research reputation that is echoed in other rankings (seehttp://lnkd.in/dwUqi7r).

You are probably familiar with the U.S. News “Best Grad Schools,” which rank programs based only on subjective surveys of department Chairs and graduate program Directors. In contrast, these new “Best Global Universities” rankings are based on ten indicators that measure reputation, publications and their citations, international collaboration, and doctoral degrees awarded (seehttp://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/articles/methodology).
