The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is proud to announce that Rachel Peragallo Urrutia, MD, MS, associate professor of General Obstetrics, Gynecology and Midwifery at UNC, contributed to a national report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. She serves on the committee that authored the recently released report, Protecting Maternal Heart Health: Prevention and Care Before, During, and After Pregnancy.Dr. Rachel Urrutia portrait
 
The report, Protecting Maternal Heart Health: Prevention and Care Before, During, and After Pregnancy, identifies cardiovascular conditions as a leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States and highlights missed opportunities to assess and manage risk, including improving blood pressure control during pregnancy. It calls for stronger preventive care, improved follow‑up after delivery, and better coordination of care across the reproductive life course.
