Why Obstetrics and Gynecology?

When I started medical school, I had no clue what type of doctor I wanted to be, but I knew I wanted a medical career that would allow me to combine my professional interests in gender-affirming care, addiction medicine, and reproductive justice with my passion for education, community, and advocacy. I owe much of my success to a number of strong women who mentored and helped raise me from a young age, but growing up in rural Appalachia, I saw how a lack of access to reproductive healthcare negatively affected and sometimes devastated the lives of so many neighbors, friends, and family members. During medical school, I found the field of obstetrics and gynecology allowed me to pursue my personal and professional interests while giving back and helping address healthcare disparities I care so deeply about.

Why UNC?

I worried virtual residency interviews would make it difficult to find a program where residents, faculty, and staff genuinely connect with and support each other. Moments into UNC’s virtual social, I realized I felt right at home despite being hundreds of miles away. My interactions during the pre-interview social and throughout my interview day reaffirmed my first impression of UNC: that this program intentionally invests in the professional success and personal wellbeing of all learners and seeks to foster and to promote community, camaraderie, and compassionate patient care in every clinic space and education setting possible. I knew this program would be the best place for me to work, to learn, and to serve alongside like-minded individuals passionate about caring for every member of our community.
