PhD Training Program

The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) is a first-year umbrella program for 15 different PhD programs across UNC’s campus. With just one application, BBSP students have access to over 350 research faculty in many different disciplines.

Fostering PhD Student Success with NOVA

NOVA (Navigating Obstacles with Vision and Aspiration) is a BioSTAR Office initiative created exclusively for incoming BBSP students at UNC to help them transition into graduate school with confidence, clarity, and opportunities for connection. NOVA begins with a Virtual Summer Bootcamp, during which incoming BBSP students connect with current PhD students and their incoming peers, get candid advice, and learn the “hidden curriculum” of graduate school before classes even begin. From there, they continue building community through Advising Pods—small peer mentoring groups matched by research interests and experiences—that provide ongoing support, practical tips, and encouragement throughout their first year.

Professional Development

Through the Training Initiatives in Biomedical & Biological Sciences (TIBBS), PhD students at UNC can learn about academic and non-academic careers, develop non-bench skills, and gain experience in different careers.

Translational Medicine Training Program

In the TransMed program, PhD students team up with a clinical co-mentor to help guide students’ research and immerse students in clinical experiences and vocabulary, as well as the overall culture of clinical research. Through a combination of courses and research projects, students can earn a certificate in translational medicine.

ImPACT Internships

ImPACT interns are paid by UNC during the 160 hours of their internship, which can be full-time or part-time. The internships can take place anytime from April to the end of the calendar year. ImPACT internships are valuable experiences for UNC trainees planning to pursue careers in industry. The internship is also valuable to companies because it provides access to top local talent.
