PhD Education & Career Development
PhD Training Program
The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) is an umbrella admitting program for 15 different PhD programs across UNC’s campus. With just 1 application, BBSP students have access to over 350 research faculty in many different disciplines.
Increasing Diversity in the Biomedical Sciences
Part of BBSP is the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD), which seeks to increase the number of students from under-resourced populations who attain PhDs and go on to successful careers in the biosciences.
TIBBS
Through the Training Initiatives in Biomedical & Biological Sciences (TIBBS), PhD students at UNC can learn about academic and non-academic careers, develop non-bench skills, and gain experience in different careers.
Translational Medicine Training Program
In the TransMed program, PhD students team up with a clinical co-mentor to help guide students’ research and immerse students in clinical experiences, vocabulary, and the overall culture of clinical research. Through a combination of courses and research projects, students can earn a certificate in translational medicine.
Graduate Certificate in College Science Teaching (CCST) Program
The Graduate Certificate in College Science Teaching is a 2.5-year program for life science PhD candidates preparing for teaching-intensive careers.
