You will be receiving an email back from the OGHE about how much you will need to pay for your travel health insurance coverage and instructions for paying on-line. These forms are typically processed once a week, and after processing you will receive an email from “Geo Blue”, which is the UNC sanctioned global insurance coverage. Do not delete that email! You will need that email to serve as your “insurance card”. If you have any questions, contact OGHE Assistant DirectorShay Slifko at shay_slifko@med.unc.edu.  You will also receive an email giving you access to the GLBE999.MOD.1112 Sakai Site where you will find the required Pre-Travel Module and corresponding quiz. The login to the quiz is your onyen and the password is revealed during the module on one of the slides.  You are also required to sign the Code of Conduct and register your individual travel with the UNC Global Travel Registry. Please read and print the information below.

PLEASE PRINT OUT THIS INFORMATION TO TAKE WITH YOU. YOU SHOULD ALSO GIVE A COPY TO A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER STAYING IN THE USA ALONG WITH YOUR PASSPORT INFORMATION, ITINERARY FOR TRAVEL AND EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION.

Go to the US State Department website (https://travel.state.gov) before you leave the US, and record this information for your country of travel so you have it easily available.

UNC SCHOOL OF MEDICINE EMERGENCY PLAN: 

In the instance of a medical emergency (serious illness/hospitalization or injury/ injury due to sexual or other assault) that may need attention beyond what is locally available while you are out of the USA, contact the GeoBlue Emergency Assistance at 610-254-8771) or email globalhealth@geo-blue.com If it is a life threatening emergency. Seek medical care THEN call GeoBlue Emergency Assistance.     

  1. If you experience exposure to blood borne pathogens via a needle stick or mucus membrane splash/splatter while in a clinical setting abroad:
    • Immediately clean the affected area with soap or sanitizer and water and notify your on-site supervisor or preceptor
    • Obtain source patient information as possible (Name, date of birth and MR#, information on HIV status and most recent testing for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C). If possible, request source patient testing.
    • If you are a student, call UNC Campus Health 24/7 at +001 (919) 966-2281. This service is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. When Campus Health Services is closed, the physician on call can be contacted through Health Link, a nurse advice service affiliated with UNC Healthcare +001-984-974-6303. Identify yourself as a UNC student abroad.
    • Initiate PEP (if you have your own kit from Campus or Occupational Health) or request locally available PEP kit from the on-site preceptor. If PEP is not available, return to the U.S. within 72 hours and report immediately to Campus Health.
  2. In the instance of a non-medical emergency (know of a disappearance/kidnapping of another student or criminal assault or you are involved in a police action) contact the US embassy or consulate in the country where you are staying. If appropriate, embassy personnel will contact local police on your behalf.
  3. If there is concern for serious political crisis or a national disaster, contact the US embassy who will have information available and a plan for US citizens living abroad for safety precautions and/or evacuation if necessary. In the instance of/concern regarding serious political crisis or natural disaster, contact the US embassy THEN contact GeoBlue as in some situations they may assist with evacuation or emergency plans.
  4. If you are a victim of sexual assault/sexual violence abroad, you may contact SASHAA (Sexual Assault Support & Help for Americans Abroad). They provide confidential sexual assault prevention & response worldwide: https://pathwaystosafety.org/contact-us/
  5. In all situations of emergency, contact the UNC Department of Public Safety 24/7 emergency line so that we are able to support you at UNC as well. (919-962-8100). Identify yourself as a UNC medical student, ask them to contact Dr. Dent, Assoc. Dean of Student Affairs (919-216-1534/beeper or 919-619-2477/mobile) or office line (919-962-8335) OR the Office of International Activities during business hours (919-962-6195).

Post-Travel Support and Counseling Services

When you return to the US, confidential counseling services are available for students, staff and faculty. Students may contact the UNC School of Medicine Wellness Coach, Allison Schad at allison_schad@med.unc.edu or Counseling and Psychological Services at 919-966-2281. Faculty should contact the Employee Assistance Program at 877-314-5841.
