Military Match/Additional Information

The military match process can be both exciting but also stressful when trying to navigate the system. Also, each branch (Army, Navy, Air Force) does things slightly different and therefore it is important to obtain branch specific information. For this reason, reaching out to your branch specific military medical liaison, UNC military student liaison, and specialty specific program directors is vitally important.

Regarding the US Army GME match, access to the “military ERAS” system, called MODS, opens in July with a rank list submitted by the applicant in October. There are currently 12 training hospitals for Army GME with roughly 74 different residencies available. There is also the option through MODs for matching at civilian institutions at what is called Va-DoD partnerships in the specialties of general surgery, urology, and neurosurgery. Results are then released in December through the MODs website. Pending the needs of the Army each year, options for civilian deferment occasionally can occur which then requires the applicant to be selected for a military deferment through MODs and then proceed forward in the civilian match process.

In order to make yourself competitive in the military match, it is highly recommended to rotate at the military treatment facility (MTF) that you would consider ranking highly. For example, the US Army typically requires and will sponsor two army rotations within the given specialty you are applying for, and this should be planned appropriately.

Please contact with further questions and we look forward to assisting you in the match process.
