During the Application Phase, students spend 12 months completing core clinical clerkships in psychiatry, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, and family medicine. Students can complete the Application Phase in one of four campus programs: Charlotte, Asheville, Wilmington or Central (Chapel Hill and surrounding areas).
Our attendance policies support students in identifying time needed during the curriculum to take care of personal matters and to attend to life events that require limited time away from class while balancing learning and accountability to classmates.
The Office of Global Health Education (OGHE) develops programmatic structure, support, and engagement in global medical education for UNC medical students and resident physicians interested in global health.
Chapel Hill and Carrboro provide an ample amount of housing including apartments, houses, condos, on-campus graduate housing, etc.
Parking and transportation resources to help medical students navigate getting to and from campus with ease.

Each year our office will host a variety of workshops and class meetings that will cover such things as residency interview questions, what to wear to your residency interviews, and other tips and tricks.
The Registrar’s Office at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine serves current medical students, alumni, and the medical school community by safeguarding the privacy of permanent student records.

Students are required to pass the Step 1 exam to advance from Foundation Phase to Application Phase. Step 2 is typically taken early in a student’s fourth year and is one important aspect of the application to residency process.
