Advising

At the UNC School of Medicine, we are committed to providing a comprehensive and personalized advising experience that supports students throughout their medical school journey. Our advising program is designed to foster academic success, professional development, and personal growth through a range of interconnected resources and dedicated faculty and staff support.

Students benefit from a robust network of advising services, including the Larry Keith Advisory Colleges, which offer longitudinal mentorship and community throughout all four years of medical school. The Office of Academic Excellence provides targeted academic support, including coaching and tutoring to enhance learning strategies and performance. For students exploring and preparing for their future careers, our SOM Career Development at Carolina (CDAC) program and our Career Advising resources offer specialty-specific guidance from experienced Career Goal Advisors. Additionally, students at our regional campuses receive individualized support from Campus Advisors, who serve as trusted mentors and advocates during the clinical years. Together, these advising programs reflect our holistic approach to medical education and our deep investment in each student’s success.

Health and Safety

At the UNC School of Medicine, student health and safety are essential to both individual success and the integrity of the clinical learning environment. This page outlines key policies related to immunizations, health screenings, safety trainings, insurance requirements, and exposure protocols—all designed to protect students and patients alike. Staying informed and compliant with these expectations ensures that students can fully engage in their medical education while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and care.

Student Life

Student life at the UNC School of Medicine is vibrant and student-driven, offering countless opportunities to build community, explore interests, and support well-being outside the classroom and clinic. Our students are leaders, collaborators, and advocates who shape the culture of our school through active participation in a wide range of extracurricular and co-curricular activities.

The Student Government serves as the official voice of the student body and works closely with faculty and staff to enhance the student experience. Through Student Activities and Interest Groups, students can connect with peers who share interests in service, advocacy, cultural identity, professional development, and more. To promote balance and resilience throughout medical training, our Wellness Program offers resources, events, and peer support focused on mental, emotional, and physical health. Whether leading a new initiative, joining a student group, or simply taking time for self-care, students at UNC find meaningful ways to grow and thrive as part of our community.

Student Support

At the UNC School of Medicine, we are deeply committed to fostering a supportive, respectful, and inclusive environment where all students can succeed. Our student support services are designed to ensure that every learner has access to the guidance, resources, and advocacy they need throughout their medical education journey.

Students can report concerns related to mistreatment, the learning environment, or professionalism through our Mistreatment, Learning Environment, and Professionalism reporting system, which is supported by a responsive and caring team. The Larry Keith Advisory Colleges provide individualized mentorship and community, while the Office of Academic Excellence offers personalized academic support, learning strategies, and tutoring. Students seeking accommodations are supported through the University Compliance Office, which collaborates with Student Affairs to ensure equitable access to all aspects of the curriculum. For career guidance, our Career Advising program offers specialty-specific support and planning throughout all four years. These interconnected support systems reflect our dedication to each student’s well-being, success, and professional development.

Wellness

At the UNC School of Medicine, student wellness is a core priority woven into every aspect of the MD experience. Our comprehensive MD Wellness Program supports the holistic well-being of students through tailored programming, peer connection, and access to vital resources. From mental health to physical fitness and emotional resilience, we are committed to helping students thrive throughout their training.

Students can access a variety of wellness-focused spaces and services, including the Tranquility Room and MD Fitness Center, which provide a quiet place for reflection, rest, and movement right within the medical education building. Dedicated lactation spaces across campus support the needs of parenting students. The student-led Tranquil Tar Heels group fosters peer-driven wellness initiatives and promotes a culture of care. Students also benefit from expert mental health services through UNC Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the Taking Care of Our Own (TCOOO) Program, which provides confidential support for health care professionals and trainees. Additionally, Campus Health offers comprehensive medical and mental health care tailored to the needs of UNC students. Together, these offerings create a strong foundation of support to help students maintain balance, find community, and take care of their whole selves.
