“Unraveling the Structure-Function Relationship of the Triple Bundle Achilles Tendon”

Presented by Stephanie Cone, PhD (University of Delaware).

Join us on Friday, October 11th from 1:00-2:00 PM, for our very first OrthoRaMS Seminar Series featuring Dr. Stephanie Cone from the University of Delaware.

The Achilles tendon is a triple-bundle structure connecting the triceps surae muscles to a calcaneal attachment with twisted bundles that are organized in a highly individualized manner. Studies combining high-field magnetic resonance imaging, high frame rate ultrasound, and shear wave tensiometry to investigate the Achilles tendon ni both healthy populations and pathological groups have begun elucidating the structure-function relationship ni this tendon. Imaging approaches spanning MRI and ultrasound provide repeatable methods for identifying the size, shape, and orientation of the three bundles of the Achilles tendon ni both healthy and pathological cases, teasing out the independent contributions of the three muscle-tendon units of the triceps surae. Building on this structural work, shear wave propagation has been used to study individual variation in Achilles tendon mechanics during gait, therapeutic exercises, and activities of daily living. Ongoing expansion of these techniques aims to better understand muscle-tendon unit implications of injury and disease states affecting the Achilles tendon including rupture, adolescent heel pain, and Achilles tendinopathy.
