Speaker Biography

Dr. James K. DeOrio is a Professor of Orthopedics at Duke University. He was Chairman of the Orthopedic Department at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida for over 15 years. He is a 1977 graduate of the George Washington University Medical School, trained at the Mayo Clinic and performed an AO fellowship in Chur, Switzerland. Dr. DeOrio is a frequent contributor to orthopedic research with over 150 original articles and book chapters and is Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic (Emeritus). From the AOFAS he is the recipient of the J. Leonard Goldner Basic Science Award and is a two time winner of the Roger Mann Award for Clinical Science.  He has done the full gamut of foot and ankle surgery from bunions and hammertoes to ankle replacements. He is the lead surgeon in the development of the Vantage ankle replacement and has now done 350.  It is thought that no one has done more bilateral Lapiplasties than Dr. DeOrio (bunion correction).  In recognition of his achievements he has been recognized as being in the Top 1% in the nation in the foot and ankle specialty and Top 20 Surgeons in North Carolina, Feb 2012 and elected by his peers in US News as one of the The 23 Top Foot & Ankle Surgeons in the U.S., 2012. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1970 and proud former member of the Falcon football team, Dr. DeOrio is also a retired Colonel in the US Air Force.
