UNC McLendon Clinical Laboratories perform millions of clinical tests annually. Its largest specialized division, chemistry, tests over 1,500,000 samples annually. Li Qian, PhD, associate professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and associate director of the McAllister Heart Institute, has received the prestigious Emerging Investigator Award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a part of the NIH. The award includes $6.5 million in funding over seven years.
Li Qian, PhD, and Jiandong Liu, PhD, associate professors in the department of Pathology and Lab Medicine, have each won prestigious Established Investigator Awards from the American Heart Association for their separate research on how to heal damaged heart tissue. Their own hearts belong to each other, and the family they’ve built together both at home and at the UNC School of Medicine.
Dr. John Schmitz and Dr. David Wohl of UNC were highlighted in an NPR story on a new approach to improve antibody testing for coronavirus. Dr. Schmitz is Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UNC and Director of the Immunology Laboratory at UNC Hospitals.
