All about Dr. Helbig!
Silas is originally from Sarasota, FL, and attended the University of Central Florida, where he studied Mechanical and Bioengineering. During college, he became interested in how engineering and medicine intersect to improve the lives of people with disabilities and physical impairments. He pursued a medical fellowship in Italy, where he met his future wife, Parker—then a UNC student and now a pediatric dentistry resident also at UNC (she’s been turning him into a Tar Heel ever since). He attended medical school in Miami at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. There, he served as President of both the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group and the Innovative Medical Technology Interest Group, blending his interests in rehabilitation and engineering. He graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors for academic excellence and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in recognition of his compassionate patient care and leadership. His professional interests include medical education, general rehabilitation, prosthetics and orthotics, spine health, and lifestyle medicine. In his free time, Silas enjoys visiting national parks, hiking, scuba diving, watching football and basketball, eating BBQ, and trivia games.
