The 4 NSH Geropsychiatry Unit is a locked, 10 bed inpatient unit with a target population of 65 years of age and older whose primary reason for hospitalization is directly related to psychiatric diagnoses or signs of dementia. Our nurses are trained as psychiatric nurses with minimal medical and surgical nursing training; therefore, the geropsychiatry unit is not classified as a medical psychiatric unit. We are designed especially for several populations of geriatric patients:

  • Those who are experiencing an acute decline in function secondary to a diagnosis of dementia
  • Those with severely impairing psychiatric illnesses requiring medication titration
  • Those with resolving delirium who are otherwise medically stable
  • Those likely to benefit from unique or difficult-to-access services (such as ECT, clozapine initiation, or lorazepam challenge)
