Carrie Brown, MD, MPH, DFAPA is the Chief Psychiatrist for North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In this role, she provides psychiatric leadership for the department, including the strategic priorities. She also serves as the Chief Medical Officer for DHHS’s 13 state-operated behavioral healthcare facilities. A graduate of Princeton University, she received her medical degree from Duke University’s School of Medicine, a Master’s in Public Health from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, and trained in Psychiatry at Duke University Hospital. She has extensive clinical experience in treating serious mental illness within the community, inpatient, integrated care, and correctional settings. She also has a background in health services research and as a research fellow with the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at UNC at Chapel Hill. Dr. Brown is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UNC School of Medicine and an Assistant Consulting Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine.
