About
Crystal E. Schiller, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she serves as Director of the UNC Center for Women’s Mood Disorders. Dr. Schiller’s NIH-funded research program investigates how changes in ovarian steroid hormones contribute to depression and anxiety across the reproductive lifespan—from puberty through the menopause transition. Her work integrates neuroscience, endocrinology, and clinical psychology to identify the biological and behavioral mechanisms that underlie women’s mood symptoms.
Dr. Schiller also conducts patient-centered research focused on improving access to effective, evidence-based mental health care. In collaboration with a large, global team of researchers, she studies how psychotherapies such as Behavioral Activation can be adapted and delivered to reach more women during periods of hormonal change.
Clinically, Dr. Schiller provides consultation and psychotherapy for women experiencing mood and anxiety disorders related to hormonal transitions. She is deeply committed to training the next generation of clinicians and researchers, mentoring students, fellows, and faculty at UNC and collaborating internationally to advance women’s mental health research and care.
