The Cecil G. Sheps Award, named for a pioneering health services researcher, physician, and UNC faculty member, goes to a member of the graduating class who over four years of undergraduate medical training, demonstrates both academic excellence in and practical commitment to the principles of Social Medicine. Academic excellence is judged by the performance of medical students in courses taught by Social Medicine faculty, while practical commitment is demonstrated by students’ sustained involvement in research projects, community work, or clinical activities that reflect the principles of Social Medicine. The winner is awarded a cash prize and a certificate.
