September 8, 2010 – The Bariatric Surgery program in the Gastrointestinal Surgery division has been officially accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This designation is testament to the facility having met the essential criteria that ensure bariatric surgery care capability and institutional performance as outlined by the ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network.

Bariatric Surgery program co-directors Tim Farrell, MD, and D. Wayne Overby, MD, are appreciative of the accreditation efforts contributed by Karen Colton, RN, Program Coordinator; Susan Phillips, RN, Vice President of Surgical Services; and Angela Overman, RN, 4 Anderson North Nurse Manager.

In addition to ACS accreditation, the UNC-CH Bariatric Surgery Center has been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) as a Blue Distinction Center.
