More than 50 campers are wrapping up a long weekend of bonding in the Triangle.

Camp Celebrate is in its 35th year of helping burn survivors accept themselves and trust others.

The camp was the first of its kind in the United States.

Children ranging in age from 7 to 15 come from all over North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia to have the experience of camping and meeting with people who understand the challenges they face.

“It helps me accept myself because I’m going to have to walk around with these burns the rest of my life. It helps me accept that,” said camper Nashanti Sanders. “At first I was like ‘I can’t accept that.’ But after I came here, it helped me accept that more and more and more.”

The camp happens each May and is free to the campers who attend.
