October 11, 2012 — Bruce Cairns, MD, has been named the Medical Director for the Respiratory Care Department.

Dr. Cairns, Professor of Surgery and Director of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, has been a strong supporter of the Respiratory Care Department at UNCH and was named the Physician of the Year for the North Carolina State Society for Respiratory Care in 2005. He has collaborated with the hospital-based Respiratory Therapists on numerous research protocols, has been supportive of patient safety initiatives that impact patients on the intensive care units, and has collaborated on behalf of the adult ECMO program which is clinically managed by the Departments of Respiratory Care and Surgery.

In his role as the Respiratory Care Department Medical Director, Dr. Cairns will help maintain standards set by the JCAHO, be a liaison between medical staff and the Department of Respiratory Care, and provide advice and direction on policies related to patient care. He will assist the clinical management team in Respiratory Care in assuring the best possible care provided by the staff in the Respiratory care department and act as a clinical resource when needed.
