Adult Congenital Heart Surgery
Adults with congenital heart disease require a lifelong relationship with a cardiologist. We are part of the UNC Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program and provide heart surgery, if needed, to adults who have had operations as children and need further intervention, and to adults who have a new diagnosis of congenital heart disease.
Common procedures include replacement of the pulmonary valve, closure of atrial septal defects and repair of anomalous pulmonary veins, aortic valve surgery, pacemaker placement, repair of coarctation of the aorta, and mitral valve repair/replacement. Patients are seen before and after surgery by a surgeon and adult congenital cardiologist in our multi-disciplinary clinic at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill.

How to Refer a Patient to Us
The UNC Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program referral number is 919-843-1283. Cardiologist Elman Frantz, MD, sees patients in a Friday clinic at our outpatient Meadowmont location in Chapel Hill. Because most patients are seen by a cardiologist prior to meeting with a heart surgeon, referrals for surgery are coordinated at the time of the clinic visit.
If you or your patient want to speak with the surgeon prior to a planned or proposed surgery, you can call 919-966-3382 to set a date and time. For those meetings that are fact-finding meetings (or second opinions), we ask that you provide a copy of the patient’s records via fax (919-966-3475 – attention Michael Mill) or bring them with you. Please include the history and physical exam, EKG, cardiac catheterization CD with report, echo tape/CD with report, CT scans with report, medications list, and any other pertinent medical information.
If you have questions, please call the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at 919-843-1283.
