January 8, 2010 — Please read the following letter from Drs. William Roper and Etta Pisano:

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the proposal to amend the School of Medicine’s constitution and establish a Department of Neurosurgery has been strongly endorsed by the faculty. The amendment to the constitution will be made, and the Department of Neurosurgery will become a reality on July 1, 2010.

Dr. Matt Ewend, the current Division Chief of Neurosurgery, will become the founding Chair of the new department. The Department of Neurosurgery will recruit new faculty members, expand the size of its residency program, and foster strengthened partnerships across campus and our region. We hope these activities will lead to enhancing the regional and national recognition of UNC neurosurgery.

Sincerely,

Bill Roper, MD
Dean

Etta D. Pisano, MD
Vice Dean for Academic Affairs
