We are pleased to announce that Drs. Brownstein and Dreesen will be taking over the leadership in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Surgical Critical Care fellowship.

Dr. Brownstein will assume the role of SICU Medical Director and Associate Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care fellowship. She has been Associate Director of the SICU for several years. In that role she has worked assiduously to augment the formal resident critical care curriculum, to improve handoffs as patients arrive in the SICU and to enhance physician-nursing communication while patients are in the SICU. Dr. Brownstein currently attends in the CVTICU as well as in the SICU and serves on the Rapid Response Committee. As such, she is well known and deeply respected throughout the Critical Care community at UNC. Dr. Brownstein is this year’s Fuller Award winner, which recognizes her commitment to education, outstanding clinical care and service.

Dr. Dreesen will assume the role of Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care fellowship, and will work with Dr. Brownstein as the co-director of the SICU. She has previously served as the Trauma Medical Director and is currently the Division Chief of General and Acute Care Surgery. She has been recognized as an educator of both residents and students. In 2013 she was chosen as the Whitehead lecturer and she will be the School of Medicine Graduation speaker this May.
