There is a high risk of burn injury in Malawi, as homes are heated with open flames. With the support of Johnson & Johnson, UNC has created a Burn Center at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. UNC is training Malawian surgical residents in the treatment of burn injury, with the hopes that they can become self-sufficient. Seventy percent of the patients treated in the center are children under the age of 10.
