January 21, 2011 — Program headed by Dr. Francis Robiscek, UNC Surgery affiliate at Carolinas Medical Center, wins an award for medical achievement in Central America.

The International Medical Outreach Program at the Carolinas Health Care system recently won the “Rodolfo Robles” award, the highest recognition for humanitarian and medical achievements in Central America. Vice President of the Outreach Program, Dr. Francis Robicsek, is also a clinically affiliated faculty member at the Department of Surgery, and has worked with the Department on several projects this past year.

In June 2010, the Carolinas Medical Center donated a fully-equipped Cath Lab to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize. The lab is a stand-alone unit, integrated into the clinical center at KHMH, but also has the capability to be a mobile unit. Administrators at Karl Heusner were incredibly grateful for this gift and say it will allow them to perform procedures never before possible in Belize, and serve as a training ground for international experts and Belizean healthcare professionals.
