October 24, 2012 — The Fogarty International Center has granted Jonathan Samuel, MD, an NIH Research Scientist Development Award for treatment of sigmoid volvulus in Malawi.
Dr. Samuel recently completed his general surgery residency at UNC and is currently a Critical Care Fellow here. His project, titled “Best Management of Signoid Volvulus: a Prospective Randomized Trial,” will study outcomes associated with various treatment strategies for sigmoid volvulus with focus on resective versus non-resective therapy for non-gangrenous sigmoid volvulus, and primary versus delayed anastomosis for gangrenous sigmoid volvulus.
The total amount of the award is $560,700, which will be spread over four years. Research will be conducted at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. Study mentors are Drs. Anthony Charles, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Critical Care; Mina Hosseinipour, Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Director for UNC Project-Malawi; and William Miller, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases.
