About

Dr. Sherry Ross, Associate Professor of Urology and Vice Chief of Pediatric Urology, graduated from East Carolina University and attended medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She completed her residency in urology at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Dr. Ross completed her pediatric urology fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. She was an assistant professor of surgery and pediatrics, director of research in pediatric urology and director of the pediatric stone clinic at Duke University before joining the Department of Urology at UNC in June 2014.

Dr. Ross is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology and is board certified in both general and pediatric urology. She is an expert in the surgical reconstruction of complex congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary tract (hypospadias, vesicoureteral reflux, cryptorchidism, obstruction of the urinary tract, intersex, exstrophy) and manages general pediatric urological conditions including urinary incontinence and nocturnal enuresis. Dr. Ross also provides urological and surgical care for children with kidney stone disease, spina bifida, neoplasms of the genitourinary tract and provides consultation services for fetal uropathies. She will be joining the UNC multidisciplinary spina bifida clinic where she will work with a team of physicians to meet all medical needs for these special patients. Dr. Ross is also trained in laparoscopy and robotic surgery and is currently working to build a pediatric urology robotic program that will bring state of the art minimally invasive surgery to the children treated at NCCH.

Dr. Ross’s research interests include urinary tract infections in the neurogenic bladder and pediatric stone disease. Dr. Ross and colleague s have worked to better understand the mechanisms involved in the high rate of urinary tract infections in patients with spina bifida, spinal cord injury and other diseases that result in poor bladder function. In addition, Dr. Ross and her team have attempted to better understand the processes behind the increasing incidence of stone disease in children. Dr. Ross has also been a mentor and advisor for many residents and medical students during her career.

Dr. Ross serves as the Director of Ambulatory Services in Pediatric Surgical Services and is currently working with other colleagues at North Carolina Children’s Hospital to improve efficiency in pediatric surgery patient services and to expand pediatric surgical services in outreach clinics throughout the state. She is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society of Pediatric Urology and the Society for Fetal Urology. Dr. Ross serves as a reviewer for numerous academic journal including the Journal of Urology, Urology, Journal of Pediatric Urology and Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Infectious Disease. She has written multiple book chapters on pediatric urology diseases and has given both educational and scientific lectures locally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Ross also volunteers her time yearly to provide urological care to indigent children in Guatemala during yearly mission trips.
