UNC Urology’s Foundational Role and Dr. Ray Tan’s Leadership Continue to Shape the Initiative

The American Urological Association (AUA) has officially opened the submission portal for its 2026 Data Research Program—an initiative designed to empower urology researchers through access to robust clinical and workforce data. Letters of Intent are due by June 22, 2025, and all AUA members are encouraged to apply.

Originally launched in June 2023, the AUA Data Research Program was created to address critical knowledge gaps and emerging research questions in urologic care, workforce development, and health policy. At the center of its inception were two leaders from UNC Urology: Dr. Hung-Jui (Ray) Tan and Dr. Matthew Nielsen, who collaborated to structure and launch this transformative program along with Dr. Amanda North from Montefiore, the Data Committee Chair Emeritus.

As of June 1st, Dr. Tan serves as Chair of the AUA Data Committee, the very group that oversees the program’s strategic direction, application review process, and data innovation efforts. Under his leadership, the committee is expanding access to high-quality data through platforms like the AQUA Registry and the AUA Annual Census, which together represent some of the most comprehensive urology datasets available for clinical and workforce research.

2026 Focus: Advancing Fairness and Workforce Insights in Urology

The 2026 AUA Data Research Program continues its commitment to addressing critical knowledge gaps in urological care, with a particular emphasis on healthcare fairness and workforce development. Building upon previous years, the program encourages research that explores disparities in urologic care (access and outcomes) and examines the evolving dynamics of the urology workforce. Projects utilizing the AUA Quality (AQUA) Registry and the AUA Annual Census data are especially encouraged to investigate these areas, aiming to inform policies and practices that promote equitable, high-quality care and a well-supported urology workforce.

Selected projects receive complimentary data access, full statistical analysis support, and a $2,000 stipend to support dissemination. The program prioritizes high-impact studies and encourages submissions focused on access, quality of care, and AUA-aligned advocacy priorities.
