UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill was recently ranked nationally across three adult specialties in the latest edition of the U.S. News’ “Best Hospitals” report.

UNC Hospitals is cited as the #2 hospital in North Carolina while UNC Health Rex in Raleigh is rated as the #4.

North Carolina Children’s Hospital at UNC was raked across 9 Children’s Specialties and is also made the list as the 2nd Best Children’s Hospital in North Carolina.

To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a facility must be rated among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for that specialty. For 2023-24, UNC Hospitals is nationally ranked in the adult specialties of:

  • Urology (#40)
  • Ear, Nose & Throat (#41)
  • Cancer (#47)

UNC Children’s was also nationally ranked by US News in nine pediatric specialties:

  • Pediatric Pulmonology & Lung Surgery (#15)
  • Pediatric Neurology & Neurosurgery (#20)
  • Pediatric Orthopedics (#21)
  • Pediatric Urology (#23)
  • Pediatric Diabetes & Endocrinology (#24)

  • Pediatric Cancer (#36)

Prostate Cancer Surgery

In addition to the overall hospital rankings, UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill was recognized as High Performing in Prostate Cancer Surgery. A hospital’s prostate cancer surgery score is based on multiple data categories, including patient outcomes, volume, cancer center designation, and more.

Over 6,000 hospitals were evaluated and eligible hospitals received one of three ratings – high performing (252 hospitals), average (641 hospitals), or below average (228 hospitals) with the balance either not offering the service or performing too few of the procedures to be rated. Hospitals that earn a high-performing rating are significantly better than the national average.
