Keith's background in his own words

I was born in Minden, Louisiana, a small town of 13,000 in northwest Louisiana. My mother was a middle school teacher, and my father was a draftsman. I have one younger sister who is now a dentist in New Orleans. Although at first I dreamed of being an astronaut, I decided to become a physician in the ninth grade.

I graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a degree in chemistry. Afterwards, I moved to Boston to attend Harvard Medical School. The best aspects of attending Harvard Medical School were the friendships that I developed with fellow students. Between my third year and fourth year of medical school, I participated in the Howard Hughes Research Scholars Program at the National Institute of Health. It was at this point that I decided to pursue a career in surgical oncology. I graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1997 and completed a general surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis in 2004. In 2007, I completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas-M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. I am presently an assistant professor of surgery at UNC School of Medicine and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

My academic and clinical practice interests are in the surgical treatments for breast, skin and endocrine malignancies and eliminating cancer treatment disparities. My wife is an intellectual property/patent attorney, and we have three young daughters. My favorite professional sports team is the Dallas Cowboys, “America’s team”. I also enjoy listening to music, traveling, and sports trivia.
