Lisa's Background in her own Words

I am an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Disease (ID) and my work includes taking care of HIV+ patients, attending on both the inpatient ward and consult services as well as maintaining an active research agenda designing HIV prevention interventions. I completed both my ID fellowship as well as my MPH in epidemiology here at UNC. Prior to that I complete residency training in Internal Medicine at Stanford, medical school at UVA and undergrad at UCLA. As you can see I did a bit of flip flopping across the country before settling here in NC, where I have been for the past 8 years. I have been directly involved with the management of HIV-infected adolescents and adults at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2001. I headed the outbreak investigation that discovered increased cases of HIV infection among black men attending college on North Carolina campuses. Currently, I am the principal investigator on a HRSA Special Projects of National Significance grant to improve outreach, care and prevention to engage in care HIV seropositive adolescent men who have sex with men (MSM) of color and a K23 (career development award) to design a unique Internet HIV intervention for young African American MSM. My interests include acute HIV infection, HIV prevention for MSM, Internet prevention interventions and social and sexual network exploration. On a more personal note, my partner and I are currently moving from Durham to just outside Carrboro. We have one son, Jacob who is 2 years old and so I can provide insight into issues around finding the balance that is required to both raise a family and focus on one’s career in an academic setting. We spend a lot of time enjoying all that NC has to offer, hiking, biking and visiting the mountains whenever we can.
