Each year, the UNC department of anesthesiology provides clinical services for over 45,000 patients. In addition to outstanding clinical care in pain management and adult and pediatric critical care medicine, the department is a national leader in anesthesiology research. One of department’s focused research programs, TRYUMPH, advances the understanding of processes mediating recovery after trauma and is developing interventions that promote rapid recovery and prevent chronic symptom development. A seven-year nationwide study of emergency room patient data by TRYUMPH faculty member Timothy Platts-Mills found that elderly individuals are significantly less likely to receive pain medication. UNC also has an excellent track record in the recruitment and retention of individuals for industry-sponsored clinical trials. UNC anesthesiologist Randall Coomb’s team was first out of eight sites nationwide in number of patients recruited to a comparison of two different catheter-stabilization systems sponsored by the 3M Company.
