With the help of School of Medicine alumni around the state and country, we are expanding our reach and ensuring our learners receive the support they need for their next steps. UNC School of Medicine Carolina Connectors serve in their local communities as liaisons to Medical Alumni Affairs – welcoming students and trainees when they transition to the next phase of their career, hosting occasional events, and spreading the word about opportunities to support the School.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who can serve as a Carolina Connector?

All School of Medicine MD or resident/fellow alumni are eligible! The intent of the program is to expand our reach and engage School of Medicine alumni all around the country, so we are primarily looking for alumni located outside the Triangle Region and the state of North Carolina. If you have questions about whether you are a good fit, please reach out!

Anyone with an interest in bringing together Tar Heel School of Medicine alumni, welcoming or providing advice to new trainees, or becoming more connected to the School of Medicine and its priorities are good fits to be a Carolina Connector!

What sorts of activities might I do as a Carolina Connector?

The program is intended to be flexible, accommodating your interests and time availability. Connectors are provided opportunities like welcoming recent graduates moving to their area for residency, hosting or consulting on events intended to engage local alumni, and promoting opportunities to give back to the School of Medicine. For each initiative or event, the Alumni Affairs Office will provide resources to help. Some of these initiatives are time-specific, like welcoming new trainees in the summer/early fall as they transition, while others can take place at any time.

What can I expect after I fill out the interest form?

A member of our team will reach out to share more information. We are happy to schedule a quick call to provide information, answer questions, discuss how you may want to contribute, and ensure the opportunity is a good fit. We will also send a welcome kit to help get you started.

How much time should I expect this volunteer opportunity to take?

The time commitment is flexible, with the individual able to opt in or out of initiatives based on availability and interest. At a minimum, we hope that Connectors will send a welcome message to new trainees in their area each year and help us promote School of Medicine engagement opportunities as they arise (events, Giving Days, etc.).
