Dr. McKenzie joined the UNC faculty in August 2015. She is an obstetric anesthesiologist who cares for patients during pregnancy and childbirth. She is dedicated to patient-centered care, with a focus on enhancing recovery after cesarean birth. Her research emphasizes improving pain management, reducing unnecessary opioid use, and ensuring equitable care for all patients.

What is your area of expertise?
I am an anesthesiologist specializing in the care of patients during pregnancy and childbirth. My work focuses on making labor and cesarean birth as safe and comfortable as possible. My approach to care and research is centered on the patient: listening to each individual, understanding their goals, and respecting their values. Both my clinical practice and my research are built around improving recovery in ways that matter most to patients and their families.
What do you enjoy most about caring for patients?
I feel honored to be part of such an important and transformative moment in people’s lives. My goal is to provide safe, effective pain relief that supports comfort while helping families feel respected and cared for throughout the birth experience. Being able to support families during this time, while also teaching and mentoring future anesthesiologists, gives my work both immediate and lasting impact.
What is the focus of your research?
My research focuses on post-cesarean pain management, opioid stewardship, and health equity in obstetric anesthesia. I am especially interested in how perioperative protocols and quality improvement initiatives can enhance maternal health and recovery following childbirth.
