Are you interested in getting hands-on experience in research? We accept a limited number of undergraduate and medical students each year to work on existing projects within our department. Preference is given to students at UNC pursuing careers in the healthcare fields. Opportunities may exist to work on a clinical trial, participate in human subject data collection, contribute to education research, work with genetic and molecular biological research and/ or data analyses. Students who volunteer for 2+ years may be offered the opportunity to present a poster at a national conference. While these positions are not paid, undergraduate students may qualify for course credit. If you are interested in applying for a volunteer position with our research program, please complete the below form to apply for a research volunteer position. Please reach out to our Research Administrative Director April Soward with any questions you may have about our research programs.

Student Travel Awards: Undergraduate Volunteers, Graduate Students and Medical StudentsDepending on the availability of funds, the Department of Anesthesiology will budget $5000 dollars for student travel. Undergraduate students who have volunteered with the Department or Graduate students mentored by a Department Faculty will be eligible to apply. For undergraduate volunteers who have worked 10 hours per week each year for at least 1-2 years, with a Department Investigator, will have the opportunity to apply for a travel award up to $1000 to co-present a poster at a national conference chosen by a Department Research PI. Research performed outside the department will not be eligible for this award. Presentation of case reports or QI projects will not be considered for these travel awards. Undergraduate students are eligible for a total of one award from the department.  Graduate students are also eligible to apply for the award to attend a conference. Graduate students working with a principal investigator in the Department can apply once per year. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the funds are spent each fiscal year. Applicants will be encouraged to also apply for additional travel funds if needed (office of undergraduate research, conference student travel awards, etc.) We are not able to pre-pay expenses many times, and because of University travel rules, reimbursement will occur after travel has been completed. Please consider this when making plans.
