About the Program


Join us for Faculty Forward: Planning, Progress & Promotion, a professional development session designed to support faculty in navigating academic career pathways and growth at UNC. This session will provide clarity on appointment types and promotion tracks while helping participants create individualized development plans using available institutional resources and supports.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare and contrast different academic appointment types and tracks.

  • Summarize the guidelines and processes for appointment and promotion.

  • Design a personalized faculty development plan using institutional resources and support systems.

Speakers


Dawn Morriston, MPH
Director of Faculty Advancement, UNC School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development 
Dawn Morriston has spent her 30-year career in North Carolina at the intersection of healthcare and education. Before joining the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, she served as the Associate Director of Educational Programs for the Department of Family Medicine at UNC and the Director of Allied, Public, Dental, and Pharmacy Education and Health Careers and Workforce Diversity at Eastern AHEC. With extensive experience in curriculum design, professional development, and grantsmanship, Dawn has secured over $20 million in funding to advance rural residencies, behavioral health integration, and faculty development initiatives. She is also the founder of the Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (LAMP) and a recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Development.

Angela B. Smith, MD, MS
Professor of Urology; Member, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Dr. Angela Smith specializes in urologic oncology, treating bladder, prostate, and kidney cancers. Her research focuses on patient-centered outcomes, risk stratification, and quality of care in invasive bladder cancer. She has served as co-PI and PI on multiple PCORI-funded projects, an AHRQ K08 grant, and numerous national committees, including the PCORI Advisory Panel, the American Urological Association’s Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee, and the Journal of Urology Editorial Board. Dr. Smith’s work exemplifies leadership in advancing patient-centered research and clinical excellence.
