Background

The Academy of Educators has established a number of teaching awards to recognize the importance of excellence in medical student teaching, increase the prestige of great teachers and make teaching a more viable part of a faculty member’s career path. The Committee feels that awards can become an important part of the recipients’ teaching portfolios, help support admission to the Academy of Medical Educators, and facilitate promotion and tenure decisions. While the goal is to offer these awards on an annual basis, it is possible that some awards would not be bestowed each year.

AOE Available Awards:

Foundation Phase Teaching Excellence Awards
Application/Individualization Phase Clinical Preceptor Excellence in Teaching Award
Application/Individualization Phase Clinical Preceptor Excellence in Teaching Award (for off-campus faculty)

Other Available Awards:

Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professorships
Craver Medical Student Teaching Award

Eligibility

The Committee has decided that the awards should complement, rather than compete with, the awards already available to School of Medicine faculty. These teaching awards are not restricted to current members of the Academy of Educators. To assure that these awards are spread out as much as possible, recipients of these awards are ineligible to receive the same award for 5 years.

Nominations

Nominations are accepted by UNC SOM students and faculty. Where appropriate, the Committee recommends that awards come from peer nominations via letters from the Course Director, Faculty Course Members and/or Department Chairs or Division Chiefs. Each nomination requires a nominating or supporting letter from the Department Chair or Division Chief. The nomination letter should provide information on the teaching contributions and student evaluations, if available, of the nominee. Other support letters could be solicited by the nominator from other course faculty and/or students. Completed nomination packets will be due in March 15, 2019.

A completed nomination packet includes the following:

  • A Nomination Letter from the Nominator
  • A SOM formatted CV from the Nominee in PDF format
  • A Letter from the Division Chief or Department Chair of the Nominee
