Dr. Cumaran earned her Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) degree through Virginia Common Wealth University in August 2017. Her capstone project during her Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice was to “Develop a checklist to improve patient safety during transport of patients post anesthesia from OR to ICU.” Her capstone project has been identified as one of the best projects among the cohorts.

Dr. Cumaran started her nursing career after completing a Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery from the School of Nursing, Pondicherry, India. She won the “Best Outgoing Student Award” from the School of Nursing. Dr. Cumaran earned her Bachelors in Nursing degree from Indira Gandhi National University, New Delhi, India. She was awarded a gold medal for outstanding performance in the National University examinations. She earned her Masters degree in Medical Surgical Nursing from University of Delhi, India. She won a president’s gold medal for academic excellence in education during her master’s program. She moved to the United States along with her husband in 2007. She worked as a Nurse, Nurse educator, and preceptor in various units at UNC, Chapel Hill. Ms. Cumaran did her post master’s through the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and earned her post master’s certificate in Nurse Anesthesia.

Her Scholarly work includes:

  • The principal investigator for a study to identify the factors associated with the occurrence of local complications among adult patients receiving intravenous infusion therapy in a selected hospital in Pondicherry. Dissertation work submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Nursing from the University of Delhi.
  • One of the prime investigators in the capstone study to assess the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine in the prevention of emergence delirium in the pediatric population.
  • Principal investigator in a study to develop a checklist to improve patient safety during transport of patient post anesthesia from operating room to intensive care unit.
