All NP, CNM, SRNA, SAA and PA student clinical requests, placements, contracts, compliance and on boarding MUST be coordinated through the APP Center.

In furtherance of the education mission of UNC-Hospitals and the UNC School of Medicine clinics, advance practice providers (APPs) at UNC-Hospitals and UNC School of Medicine clinics precept advanced practice provider students when feasible.  The Advanced Practice Provider Center serves as the centralized liaison for all APP student rotations. The APP Center is the Point of Contact (POC) for Joint Commission and other Hospital Regulatory reporting requirements for all APP student rotations.

Definitions

APP Students:  Nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students, certified nurse midwifery students, certified anesthesiologist assistant students, and certified registered nurse anesthetist students.

Visiting PA Rotation:  ELECTIVE PA student rotations only.  Core rotations are NOT available for visiting PA students.

APP Center Preceptors:  Advance practice providers (NPs, PAs, CNMs, CAAs, CRNAs) who have been employed by UNC-Hospitals/SOM Clinics for at least 6 months.  It is important to note that physicians are not APPs and are not in the pool of APP Center Preceptors.  While physicians are out of scope for the APP Center to actively place students, an APP student who is precepted by a physician MUST be on boarded by the APP Center.

UNC Hospitals Sites (defined):  The APP Center is required to track all APP student clinical rotations at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus, as well as all UNC SOM/Faculty Physician clinics.

Note:  UNC Rex, Chatham Hospital and UNCPN are NOT part of UNC-Hospitals/SOM clinic locations where the APP Center places students.  Schools need to contact those UNC Health entities separately as they have their own student placement processes.

Prioritization of Requests

Rotations are NOT based on first-come first-served basis.   APP student rotation requests are prioritized as follows:

  1. UNC-Chapel Hill students
  2. UNC Health employees
  3. Other UNC system schools
  4. Other in state schools
  5. NC residents attending out of state programs
  6. Out of state students in out of state programs
