Confocal interference contrast image of the cytoskeleton of a human lumbar motor neuron cell body stained with methylene blue. Isolated cell bodies were extracted by the method of He et al. (1990). Nissl bodies (pink) remain associated with the cytoskeleton and extend out into the dendrites. Liposfuscin, which appears blue, yellow, white and red, also is not removed by the extraction procedure and remains with the matrix.
