Seminar with Saskia Hemmers, PhD
January 16, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
in-person only
About the speaker:
Dr. Hemmers established a strong foundation in cellular immunology during her postdoctoral training with Dr. Rudensky at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, that led to the establishment of her first independent research laboratory at Duke. Since joining the Integrative Immunobiology department, the lab has set out to gain a deeper understanding of how tissue cues affect immune and glial cell behavior. The lab is particularly focused on how tissue damage and inflammation shape T cell and glial cell function in the context of neuroinflammation. An additional line of research probes how the cellular ontogeny of T cells contributes to the layered immune system in adulthood.
Dr. Hemmers is a dedicated mentor to the next generation of scientists. She teaches a variety of classes and currently supervises graduate students and Duke undergraduates. Her teaching and mentoring approaches are tailored towards the individual’s needs and a collaborative process.
